Sonnet for Alice

A Flower Bitten
by an Early Frost
on a Hot Summer Night

- Dodi Dizon

When I look back at life today I sight
the woman who so dearly touched my life
and left me sadly on a summer night,
I smile at me despite the grief I gripe.

She journeyed through the years, withstood the pain
Her mortal body took what men abhor,
defied the sting some serpent did in vain
while Death stalked her, she clung to life the more.

Indeed, a purple flower few would greet
which blossomed in a crack behind a grave,
embraced the rains, the moist and summer heat
she was the star who made my niche on stage.

A flower bitten by an early frost
Her legacy will live and won’t be lost.
